Discussion
Hi Alois,
I wonder if there is a difference, generally, esp in non elite play between males and females.
I notice that generally females don't put too much spin (be it top or side, especially for shake hand grip) on the ball. Some of the older females are great at pushing. And using long pimples.
Having had all male coaches and hitting up with males I have gotten used to their style of play, but playing females I find somewhat challenging. With the coaching some of the focus is on looping and top spin, which is a bit challenging to implement in practice with males because I have developed more of an inconsistent slapping game.
I am just trying to get more of a perspective on the general tendencies, so that I can focus on developing my approach to playing. I tend to practice with males and I mostly encounter females in the Veterans comps.
Thank you for your assistance
Cheers Alena
Hi Alena,
I think there is a slight difference in the general game styles. As a big generalisation, females tend to play flatter and closer to the table while males tend to play a little further away with more spin.
If you are playing a lot of females in matches it would be good to try to train a little more with them so that you get used to the differences.
Although attacking is the most popular style at the top level in Table Tennis, it is important to be able to defend well. If you choose to play a defensive style then you should be practicing these strokes all the time. If you play an attacking stroke then you should still try and find some time for these strokes. If you can win one extra point by defending well when pressured, it could make the difference between winning and losing.
