Training
Hi Alois, recently I played a school tournament and I met this guy who could generate lots of topspin on his loops and also occasionally do a no spin loop and both of those techniques are pretty fast so I can't react in time. Have you ever experienced something like this and how do you deal with this type of variation?
And also I do struggle against heavy topspin when blocking with my short pips, any tips would be appreciated :)
Hi Jasper,
The main thing is to watch the difference in the contact. The spinny ball will have more of a brushing contact. The no spin ball will have a flatter contact and may be a slower contact as well.
The difficult part is having the time to adjust to these two balls as they come in. This will come with getting experience against these balls in training.
Start with your training partner only doing one option e.g. spinny topspin. Get used to dealing with these. Then get them to do no spin topspin and get used to dealing with these. The next step would be to get them to vary the spin and no spin so that you still know what is coming but need to adjust between the two. Then get them to vary without you knowing and see if you can pick the difference and adjust in time.
Do you enjoy watching great Table Tennis rallies where one player is smashing and the other is lobbing? Of course you do, everyone loves that. In Table Tennis if you can win a point when lobbing then it will really play with your opponents mind. It's really a 2 point turnaround from 1 they should have won to 1 you actually won. In this session we give you plenty of practice to improve your lobbing skills.
