Detecting side spin

How can I better detect side spin and react in time?

I try to see if my opponent's bat moves to my right or left, then counteract by moving my bat toward the same side when striking to ball. This isn't working well for me.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Kevin.

In my 70s and just started playing again after many years. I'm also left handed and appreciate that Alois plays lefty in many videos.

Hi Kevin,

This can take a little getting used to.  There are variations in the amount of spin as well.  Stay with your principles and keep trying to return the ball as close to the middle of the table as you can.  Only with many many returns will you get the feel for the subtlety.  However you are constantly improving with each time you make an attempt.  Make sure you watch where the ball is going, even or especially when you miss the table.  This will give you good information for the next time...

Judging the Length of a Serve

A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
