Strokes

There is such a difference in class between myself and everyone else in the club.  I go every week and get beat badly every week.  Some of the guys try to help me develop my game but with only 2 hours per week, I think it's pointless.  I am thinking about giving up the sport for now, too bad there is no one there at my level.  I have watched lots of videos but it does not help if you do not have a table or a regular practice partner.  I love the game, but am not good enough and may never be good enough.  It's not very fun right now....

Any Advice?

Hi Fasi,

You sound like you are really struggling. What if you try to find some other players to play with.  Start recruiting from people you know.It sounds like the club is a good one and people are helpful.

If you can set yourself some trining goals you may start to enjoy it a bit more.  For example set yourself a target of htiing a certain number of strokes in a row or doing a footwork drill for a certain number of hits.

By working through these goals, I hope you will see that it doesn't matter your level if you are starting to improve a little that is all that matters.

I have a table and robot at my house and my work has a table for use. At work it is a pretty nice Butterfly so that helps. Most of the guys at work like to play matches and not work on drills and such so I pretty much have to train on my own. When at home I dont really get on the table too much since it is so much easier to practice my strokes while watching TV (dont need to set up table and robot). The practice during TV time can be done with only a bat and no ball just make sure you are practicing a correct swing which you can get from PingSkills videos. I also practice serving onto the bed for placement, accuracy and also spin. When I do that I have a container of about 30-40 balls. Even though the bed is nowhere near a tables dimensions if you can get the ball to land where you want it to then you will develop the accuracy and make the needed adjustments when you get on a table.

I also record myself with my phone from time to time to verify my form is decent and make adjustments as needed.

You might be able to locate others in your area with similiar skill levels and have their own table to practice through websites like MeetUp.com.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Are there any older players in your club? I find that some of the old guys know how to play well but don't have the energy to play hard for a long time and welcome the chance to coach someone who asks respectfully.
