Countering a skiddy topspin

Strokes

Hi Alois.Recently I have been playing a lot of topspin to topspin and i'm getting pretty good at it (thanks again to pingskills to which i owe almost all of my table tennis skills). Now my problem is in between the topspin rally sometimes i receive a a low fast skiddy topspin that sort of zips on the table (think of a flipper in cricket) without bouncing much but still has considerable amounts of topspin. How do i deal with such strokes?

Hi Abhiram,

This can be a difficult ball to deal with.  You need to stay really low with your legs.  Then you can still play a good topspin stroke.  Sometimes if the ball comes on really quickly and you don't have time, just hit the ball back low over the net and then wait for the next ball to play a topspin again.  This shot is a mixture of a block and a lob and is called 'Fishing'.

Forehand Counterhit

The forehand counterhit or forehand drive is the foundation for more attacking strokes such as the forehand topspin or forehand loop. There are 3 critical factors:

  1. Your feet position
  2. Your start position
  3. Your finish position

If you concentrate on these 3 factors then your stroke will become extremely consistent. Once you can reliably hit 100 balls in a row then you are ready for more attacking strokes. If you can hit 1,000 balls on in a row then you know you've truly mastered the stroke.

Fishing?  Is it sort of like a long ball push with no spin ? Whats the racket angle perpendicular or say around 70-80degrees closed ?

More like a long ball block so the angle is almost 90 degrees.
