Counterhits

Strokes

Hi,

The problem with my counterhits is that more times than not, they end up hitting the net. My coach says that I am hitting the ball at a greater height than I should be, especially on the forehand sid. I wanted to understand the dynamics and the correct action which causes the ball to rise above the net. For example, is it an up to down hand movement stroke or a down to up stroke. Please explain.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Viki,

For the counterhit you do need a slight down to up motion to lift the ball with a little topspin.  If you hit it too flat or downwards, it will go into the net.

Take a look at our lesson on The Forehand Counterhit for some more tips on how to play the stroke.

Forehand Counterhit

The forehand counterhit or forehand drive is the foundation for more attacking strokes such as the forehand topspin or forehand loop. There are 3 critical factors:

  1. Your feet position
  2. Your start position
  3. Your finish position

If you concentrate on these 3 factors then your stroke will become extremely consistent. Once you can reliably hit 100 balls in a row then you are ready for more attacking strokes. If you can hit 1,000 balls on in a row then you know you've truly mastered the stroke.
