Strategy
I have an opponent who plays very very consistenly, simply hitting the ball back for several shots, waits for an opportunity and then attacks by smashing in clever directions. I love to smash the ball and do it very often against other opponents, but this opponent has topspin and backspin shots as well so it is difficult to smash correctly. What frustrates me the most is that he adapts very quickly whenever I try new tactics and always comes up with some way of countering them. What should I do?
Hi,
The main thing here is to set up the point so that you are getting the first opportunity to attack. It sounds to me like he is getting the first opportunity too often.
The first way is to improve your serves. By getting better serves you will gain the ascendency early in the rally.
Also work on your return of serve. Work at making it as difficult as possible for him to attack the ball. Vary the return to differnt places on the table and withh different speed. Then you need to be looking for an attacking opportunity.
Try to form a basic plan to keep attacking at your first opprotunity.
Good luck with it.
In this video, we share 2 essential tips that can instantly improve your doubles play whether you're just starting out or already competing in matches.
🏓 Tip 1: Learn why playing more shots down the line helps your partner stay in position and how a well-timed cross-court attack can still surprise your opponents.
🏓 Tip 2: Discover the power of serving short and close to the centre line to reduce your opponents’ attacking options and give your team the advantage.
These small adjustments can make a big difference in your coordination, positioning, and success as a doubles pair.
