Hi,

I am more of offensive player, so when I see a ball high enough to hit, I do it. Recently, when one of my opponents kept returning with a short chop to my forehand,I flicked it using an open racket angle. But when I returned to my home,I realized that someday, someone could also return to me a short chop. My real question is, when I return the ball with a short chop, and my opponent returns it with a flick, what type of return would I get, a backspin one,a topspin one or a normal ball?

Also, the same player sometimes returns the ball with a very high deep chop. When I try to smash it, it goes to the net and when I smash the same with an open racket angle, the ball goes outside the table. What should I do?If possible, please answer with a video.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Sourav,

When your opponent flicks the ball fast it feels like the ball is heavier because of the speed of the ball hitting your racket.  So have a more vertical stroke to lift it over the net.

If the ball is high with a lot of backspin, I like to see players making a fast topspin.  The backspin makes it more difficult to get the right angle to smash the ball on the table.  If the ball is short on your side then you can smash it.  It is difficult to do it off a ball that is deep on your side.
