Hi coach

what kind of stroke should i play in order to avoid a smash or mini smash from the opponent? Because sometimes there are some players who are having very effective topspin smashes. They can smash from height as well as low on the table. Please tell me some easy and effective shot to play or to use any strategy against these players.

Hi Usman,

The best way to combat smashers is to keep the ball low over the net.  Ideally if you can keep the ball low with backspin it will make it even more difficult for them.

If they are serving with backspin, then use a push or chop to keep the ball low.  If they are serving topspin then focus on placement and  keeping the return as low as possible.  Place the ball into difficult positions for them.  For example, they will have an area that they find easiest to smash from.  Place the ball into another area.

Remember they can only smash effectively, if you give them the right ball to smash.
