CLooping against heavy underspin chops

Strokes

I had my first experience today playing against a long pimples chopper. Sure enough, when I lopped into his pimples the return came back with immense underspin. When I tried looping that 2nd ball, at first I could not manage to get ball over the net despite my vertical stroke.

While experimenting I opened up my bat face to the point where it was actually angled slightly upward to the ceiling. I then made a contact that had a mix of brush and solid "hit" too. This flat contact got the ball up in the air and over the net, yet still with heavy topspin.

Is this the correct approach?

Hi Dan,

You have done very well to adjust like that.  You can also just get your bat to move through faster to counteract the backspin on the ball.  You do however have to get the bat moving really fast if the ball has a lot of backspin.

Adjusting the angle like you have done is also a good way of dealing with it.  With that approach though you will not be getting as much spin on the ball.
