Hi,

My game style has been developing a lot lately and I find myself to be very offensive against most people I play. However, when I come across a player with an even more powerful attack than I have, I find myself blocking a lot and do not have the time to play attacking shots of my own. During a long rally of this type, would it be appropriate, even as an offensive player, to try and play a chop block (or any other backspin shot?) to throw the opponent's rhythm off and give me a chance to attack? Or, would you suggest a different tactic when you find yourself in this situation?

Hi Justin,

Great to hear that your game is developing.

I think variation is really important.  I would play a chop or a slower ball just to change the rhythm.  A chop block is difficult to play in more important situations but if you think you can utilise it then give it a try.

Justin,

I know the feeling when encountering players who are better. Playing the short game as the coach said is a great variation and is effective. But rallies, where your opponent attacks first and is stronger, is not totally avoidable. If you are into a blocking situation, work on changing direction or speed or both to throw off your opponent's attack.

Here is a demonstration of me playing players (highlights) last month who are better than me winning points during various rallies where they would open up first or I would open first and the different blocking and offensive moves that I would do to win the points. Some matches I won while others I lost! This may help your game...
