Hi Dave,

Australia's best player, William Henzell, has a stronger backhand then forehand. There is nothing wrong with playing to your strengths. So yes, your backhand can be your main weapon.

However to develop your game to the higher levels, you need to be good off both wings so I would suggest it is still important for you to try and improve your forehand.

Good luck!

Tactics Against Penhold Players

When playing penhold players it is important to remember to first analyse your opponent as you would if they used any grip. What are their strengths and weaknesses? A common weakness of penhold players is their forehand block especially against a slow spinny topspin. Their backhand may be a weakness if they use the traditional style, or you may wish to explore the crossover point if they are using the reverse penhold backhand.

There's probably a limit to how good you can be without a good forehand, but within that limit I find personal quirks like playing backhand all the time can really frustrate opponents who are used to 'typical' players.
