Let's say I served to you, and it's coming at you now. Can I shout or make any loud alarming sound to put you off and mess up? And I probably already know the answer, but can I throw stuff at the opponent's face (I saw someone launch a donkey sweat sponge in a competitive game and he still got a point)?

You're right to suspect the answer already — both shouting to distract and throwing objects at your opponent are not allowed under the rules of table tennis.

Here’s how it breaks down under the official ITTF rules:

Making Loud or Distracting Noises

  • Rule 3.5.1.3 (Conduct) says that players must not distract their opponents during a rally.

  • Making a loud shout intended to distract your opponent during their shot (like yelling just as they hit) would be considered unsporting behavior.

  • The umpire can penalise this with a warning, a point penalty, or even disqualification if it continues.

So — you can “cho” after you win a point, or shout in celebration, but not during your opponent’s shot or when they’re about to hit.
