Hi Coach,

I realised that I have a talent for blocking. However, my coach advises me to focus on being an all-rounder. Additionally, I totally have 0/100 skill for playing offensive style. I am a 17 year old teen and would like to ask you for advice.

Hi Peter,

I think your coach has it right.  It is difficult to win and reach a higher level with only blocking.  It is not too late to learn to play a little more aggressively.  Practice your topspin against block. It will be worthwhile when it comes to match time.

If you only block your opponent won't be under any pressure to make the attack.  They will be able to take their time and pick the ball they want to attack hard.  If you can attack then they will have to keep things tighter which will lead to them making more errors.

Tactics Against Penhold Players

When playing penhold players it is important to remember to first analyse your opponent as you would if they used any grip. What are their strengths and weaknesses? A common weakness of penhold players is their forehand block especially against a slow spinny topspin. Their backhand may be a weakness if they use the traditional style, or you may wish to explore the crossover point if they are using the reverse penhold backhand.
