I serve 90% from middle of table with BH, because I have Chinese tacky rubber (Friendship Transcend Higher 1.8). How I can get most backspin when I serve short to opponents FH? Should I contact the ball under 45 degrees, horizontal with table or go with blade around the ball ? Is it better to use lower or upper side of blade ? Croatian national team player advised my that I, after first contact the ball, must quickly pull hand back to reduce speed of ball.

Hi Mladen,

You need to get right under the ball for more backspin. The flick of the wrist and fine contact are what give you the spin and short serve.  The flick back are a result of the loose wrist and flicking action of the wrist and then the wrist coming back to its natural position.

The Kicker Serve

The kicker serve is one of our "must learn" serves. It's fast, fun, and has lots of topspin. It can be dangerous because if it's not fast enough and if you don't surprise your opponent then they may be able to attack it forcefully putting you on the defensive straight away. Used well though, and sparingly, it can be a great weapon. It can win you a point outright and it will stop your opponent from standing over the table waiting for your short serves since they need to be ready for anything.
