Hi

I've recently discovered from matches that it's hard to build consistent 3rd ball attack using many different serves, and I'd like to focus on one serve and get really used to it. I also have a backhand topspin similar to kreanga which I can generate a lot of speed with using my wrist. Can you recommend any serve and where to place it so I'll more than likely get a return to my backhand?

Thanks

Hi,

I think a Backhand serve or the Tomahawk serve get you into a good position to play a backhand straight away however the spin takes the ball to the forehand side.

If you use the Pendulum serve and serve it across to their backhand it will give you a better chance of getting a return to your backhand side.

Try these two options and see which feels more comfortable for you.

I think the reverse tomahawk is the best, although it's difficult to do well

Hi there,

The diagonal pendulum serve with heavy side spin and a bit of top spin will most likely result in a return deep into your backhand. At least, that's what's happening to me most of the times, and I have to admit that it's not necessarily very clever from my part since I then often have a problem dealing with my own spin (guess what, I prefer when the return simply misses the table !)

An alternative, although I don't think such serve would be recommended here, is to serve straight ahead with the forehand in a wiping motion towards your backhand side, generating similar sidespin as with the pendulum, plus it might be quicker to get in a backhand topspin position from there. The drawback of such serve being of course that your opponent will easily read it. It can have a surprise effect for a couple of times in a match though !

Ciao !

you should watch some matches of kreanga (greece player). he is known for his incredible backhand. and his play is also focused on his backhand. he uses his backhand till the middle of the table and in some occasions even further. also, when he serves with his backhand he serves from the forehand side.

also by watching Zhang Jike you may learn something. he involves his backhand alot when playing

Should you play a fast topspin with a loop or another topspin?

A Loop is a slower topspin.

So should you play back a slow topspin (loop) or a fast topspin to a fast topspin?

Hi Ayesha,

There are no right or wrong answers here. You have a number of options for returning someone's topspin strokes. You can block them back, or you can topspin them back. It really depends upon the situation in the point and your ability. If you can make a topspin stroke back it puts your opponent under a lot more pressure but it is a much harder stroke to make. During practice you can try different techniques and see which works best for you.
