When both players are in position to play can the server hit the ball in the air and catch it and then serve, or hit the ball (bounce) off the floor before a serve.ie tennis style.

Cheers Bryne

Hi Bryne,

If the umpire deems that the player has started his serve then he wouldn't be allowed to do that.  If it is before he has started then it is usually allowed as long as it is not excessive.

There has to be a pause after he hits the ball in the air or onto the floor.  The ball has to be still (stopped) in his hand.

Has it been a problem?

Doubles Serving Rules

In this video we go over the somewhat complicated rules of serving for doubles in table tennis. There are a couple of extra rules for doubles that you don't apply to singles. In doubles you always serve from the right hand box diagonally to your opponent's right hand box. Each player has 2 serves each. If you've just been receiving then it's your turn to serve next.
