Hi Sam,
Look for bat with decent quality rubber first and foremost.
Take a look at the Blog we have done on Equipment Experiment. It will give you some ideas of what to look for.
Don't go for something too fats or too expensive to start with. Around US$50 is good to start with. Werecommend the Stiga Carbotech as an ideal bat to start with. The next one if you can afford it is the William Henzell Bat with Mark V.
