I would like to know if the amount of topspin and backspin depend on the bat you use. See, I have a problem I've been playing table tennis for a while but I still use the same old bat because I'm used to it!(stiga contact...). I would like to know if the spin depends on the rubber or sponge? I really dont know about that and I want to learn about this. (if its not too much....can you tell me which kind of bat are you using in the lessons....ive seen them all so far).

Hi Manuel,

The amount of spin you can generate does depend on your bat. If you purchase a decent bat (we recommend several good bats in our online store), then you will be able to generate spin provided you use the correct technique.

Although I haven't used the Stiga Contact, I believe that it is a decent bat to get you started. It may be similar to our Stiga Carbotech. How long have you had the bat?

Depending on how much you play and how well you look after your rubbers, the bat may last anywhere between 6 and 12 months before you need to consider a new bat or new rubbers. Once the rubber does get too old, it definitely affects your ability to spin the ball. Top players who train everyday would change their rubbers every 2 to 4 weeks.

To generate spin you need (as well as a decent bat) to have a fast swing and also to contact the ball finely. If you just swing quickly but don't brush the ball finely, you won't get any spin. If you brush the ball finely but don't have enough racket speed, again you won't generate any spin. But by combining these two elements, 1) racket speed and 2) brushing the ball finely, you will be able to impart lots of spin on the ball.
