Hi Joel,
Look for a bat with smooth rubber. The rubber should have some grip on it as well. To start with you can look for a bat in the US$30 to 50 price range.
Choose a reputable brand like Stiga, Butterfly, Joola, Yasaka etc. and you won't go too far wrong.
