Serving
Hi Pingskills,
I know you're not supposed to toss it towards you and that it should be as vertical as possible but do you toss it right in front of you or should it be tossed slightly to the side of you, as in towards your bat.
When I watch videos this is what people seem to be doing, but I'm not sure. Maybe this is why I sometimes don't get much spin because it's harder to get that brushing action in front of my body?
Hi Richard,
For a Pendulum serve you do toss the ball up slightly towards your right hip for a right hander. This gets the ball into a better hitting zone. It is difficult to swing with your forearm and wrist if the ball is directly in front of you.
The kicker serve is one of our "must learn" serves. It's fast, fun, and has lots of topspin. It can be dangerous because if it's not fast enough and if you don't surprise your opponent then they may be able to attack it forcefully putting you on the defensive straight away. Used well though, and sparingly, it can be a great weapon. It can win you a point outright and it will stop your opponent from standing over the table waiting for your short serves since they need to be ready for anything.

Thanks Alois. I'm a lefthander so my left hip then. I assume it's the same for the backspin serve. What about for the serve Par Gerell uses?
