Backhand topspin curving too much

Strokes

Hi Alois and Jeff. My backhand topspin is probably my best shot however when I am away from the table maybe one step behind my receive setup and I really try to rip through one, sometimes I get a lot of unwanted side spin . This normally means it goes long because it has less top spin.

Hi Stuart,

Make sure when you extend the stroke that you are going straight back rather than back and to the side.  If you start straight behind the contact point it will help you to generate more pure topspin. Just before contact also think about pushing your bat a bit more forward rather than sideways.

I watched the podcast last night . Thanks for answering my question the side spin I get however was the opposite side spin . But I think its the same principle . I think I am starting left of my body to get a longer swing and I finish on the right hand side of my body giving it right hand side.

Hi Stuart,

Ah, sorry misunderstood.  Yes you are probably right then.  Starting straight behind the line of the ball will help still.
