Backhand smash or backhand topspin after loop

Strokes

Sir,

When I look at the video clips of Waldner, I noticed that his backhand loop is always followed with a backhand smash stroke (seems more flat than spinny) or he moves to hit a forehand topspin. In modern table tennis it seems that players like zhang Jike and Timo Boll always go for the spinny shots even after their backhand opening loop. Backhand topspin strokes are likely to go wrong especially from mid distance.

Hi Dhaval,

The next ball is a matter of preference.  You can hit it flatter or more topspin.  For more safety you can use the topspin or if you want to try and finish the rally then play a flatter faster ball.  Waldner had a particularly good Backhand punch.

Stop Rushing Your Table Tennis Strokes

Table tennis is fast, but rushing your shots is the biggest mistake we see. Hitting the ball too early throws off your timing, balance, and control. In this video, we show you how to play with better rhythm and stay calm under pressure.
