Hey coaches,

I tried the backhand sidespin flick but it always hits the net. Help? I've seen Ma Long do it and he doesn't postiton the nose of his bat that low. Is it still the same thing?

Hi Jack,

It is the same stroke.  Like a lot of things that the professionals do, they make it look that bit easier.

He is generating enough speed with his racket from where he starts.  When you are starting, it is best to have a bigger swing so that you can generate the speed which is crucial for getting the spin to get the ball over the net.

Strawberry Flick

The strawberry flick is the opposite of the banana flick and involves utilising the wrist to get the ball spinning with topspin and sidespin. Used in conjunction with the banana flick it can be very deceptive. The banana flick is a more reliable stroke and that's why you see more top players using it over the strawberry flick.
