Strokes
Hi Alois
During a rally if i suddenly get a high ball to my forehand , I am able to smash it well and even when it is lobbed back, I am able to continue the rally well on my forehand side however in a rally suddenly if i get a high ball to my backhand, mostly the shot not contolled and goes away over the other side of the table. What is the best way to train and learn a backhand smash of the high ball because i find it difficult to get the bat over the ball say shoulder height or so and control the smash.
Thanks
Regards
Grenville
Hi Grenville,
If the ball is high on the backhand side you should have enough time to step around and make a forehand smash. This is a much easier stroke than the backhand smash.
You will notice that most players never use a Backhand smash. As soon as you see the ball up and high to the backhand side make the movement with your feet first.
Take a look at our lesson on the Forehand Smash and take particular note of the movement of the feet.
The pivot is where you are moving around your backhand corner to play a forehand. This is something that will come in handy in a match situation, especially if you have a stronger forehand. We will show you the best way to move in the pivot footwork.

Persson is the only professional player I've seen regularly smash with his BH.
