Hi,

I'm a right handed player. Yesterday my trainer tried to learn me a new way of returning a backhand backspin side spin serve. They tried to learn me how to push a ball from the right to the left. I'm able to do the normal push and the push from left to right but for some reason I wasn't able to do this. As soon as the ball bounced on my side of the table and I got my bat high and brought it down towards the ball to perform this technique I just sort of flicked it. It happened over and over again, the ball bounced, I wanted to do this backhand push but instead of doing that I sort of flicked the ball or I did a left to right push.
Can you please help me with this?

Thanks!

Hi Izzy,

I am not sure if I have the right picture of what you are meaning.  If you are trying to do a backhand push going from right to left it can be an awkward shot.  It is like a sidespin punch.  With all of these things experiment a bit but try to think about where you want to start and finish your stroke.

When your opponent is serving a backhand sidespin serve the ball goes to the left when you just push it. But when you push going from left to right it will go even more to the left because you are playing along with the sidespin. So they tried to teach me how to naturalize that sidespin which isn't really an awkward movement just from right to left but more like you're just diving into the ball starting on the right side of the ball instead of the left side.
I don't know how to explain this properly but I hope this made it a little bit clear..
The person who was trying to teach me this one the Dutch Championships for B women and is now number 16 in the Dutch ranking so I guess it's a proper technique..

Hi Izzy,

OK, that sounds a bit more simple.  I think you mainly need to think about hitting the ball on the left had side.  You can do this with the angle of your racket as well as the type of stroke.
