Backhand from the forehand side

Strokes

Hi Pingskills,

Why do a lot of the Asian players choose to move right across the table and play a backhand flick off a short serve from the forehand side? Why not just play a forehand flick?

this link kind of goes against what I said there. This is Ovtcharov playing the shot at 55 seconds. This ball is actually long (i think), so why not hit a forehand?

Hi Simon,

Ovtcharov is a special player with a special backhand.  He uses his backhand a lot from the forehand side.  It is not something that I would recommend to most players and difficult to copy.

I would say to most players to use your forehand topspin in that situation.

Strawberry Flick

The strawberry flick is the opposite of the banana flick and involves utilising the wrist to get the ball spinning with topspin and sidespin. Used in conjunction with the banana flick it can be very deceptive. The banana flick is a more reliable stroke and that's why you see more top players using it over the strawberry flick.
