During a backhand counterhit or a backhand drive how active should the wrist be? I've been told to keep the wrist out of the stroke but without some wrist movement the stroke feels awkward.

Hi Logan,

Initially keep the wrist reasonably firm so that it isn't changing direction or angle too much at all  this will help you with consistency.  Once you have some consistency you can relax the wrist so that the wrist is helping you to get a bit of speed and a little more topspin.

It is a grey area as to when this then becomes a topspin but it is just words so don't be too worried about it.

Snake Shot

A snake shot is a type of stroke which is specifically used against a drop shot. It is usually loaded with a heavy spin so that the opponent finds it difficult to counter. The type of spin can be backspin, sidespin or topspin depending on your choice. You need to make a movement after hitting the ball to confuse your opponent.
