Backhand attack from a pimple or Twiddling

Strokes

I was earlier a more defensive player but now I am attacking a lot and don't chop often. My forehand topspin is good but the problem is with my backhand shots. My backhand is a Tibhar Grass Ultra long pimpled rubber. The problem is most of the times if I try an attacking shot from my backhand it either goes to the net or goes out of the table. And therefore in a match situation because I am not confident to attack from my backhand I simply push even the long balls.

When I practice and when I make mistakes from backhand it is really frustrating.I do  multiball  practice to improve backhand. Is it possible to learn to attack from  long pimpled rubber if I practice? Can you suggest any drills I could use?

Hi Praveen,

We do have a lesson on this stroke in our Strokes & Techniques section on LP Attack Against Backspin for our Premium members.

If you really want to start to attack more, you may think about learning to twiddle.  This means changing the bat around in your hand so that you have the normal rubber on the backhand when you get the opportunity to attack.  Give it a try and see if you can get the feel of ‘twiddling'.

Good answer Alois, but could Praveen attack with the long pimples instead of twiddling, and if so how best to achieve it.

Yes I would really like to learn to attack from pimple rubber without twiddling.I have to change the racket angle when twiddling as my forehand is a Tenergy 25 and if I play with a open face with Tenergy, as I do for pimpled rubber ball goes away from the table.Making that racket angle adjustment is difficult while twiddling.

Hi Alan,

You can attack with the ing pimples especially off a backspin ball.  You open the face of your racket and hit through the ball like you would with normal rubber off a flat or ball with a little bit of topspin.  This is something we go through in the LP Attack Against Backspin lesson.
