Back spin serves

Serving

No matter how hard I try, I can't manage to impart much spin on my serves, eg a backspin serve. Others have tried to show me but I can't seem to get that spinny wrist action.  How can I practise this please?

I've been playing for about 5 years, currently taking part in Division 4 league matches.  Can you help please?

Hi Angelica,

The most important thing is the angle of your racket to start with.  Tilt your racket back way further than you think is necessary.  Feel like the racket is facing the back wall to start with.  It will feel strange...

Then move your racket forward making sure you keep the angle of your racket the same... Videoing yourself from side on while doing this will help.

Then ensure you are getting a brushing action with your racket coming forward.  Do it all away from a table so that you don't have the pressure of getting the ball on the table to start with.

Hey thanks a lot Alois.  I've only just seen your reply - sorry, I didn't know where to look (doh).  I'll definitely try to practise in this way, starting with my training session this afternoon.  Best, Angelica
