Attacking Short balls with heavy backspin

Strokes

Hi Alois,

I have a problem with short chops (the ones which would bounce twice on the table). Push or drop shot is not a problem, but I want to attack thes balls. Every time i try to flip with slight topspin the ball is going into the net.

I can easily topsin long chops, which come over the table, but with short balls my topspin fails.

Any suggestions? May I play a smash without spin or hit the ball more on the side of the ball?

Thanks

Jürgen

Hi Jürgen,

You can try opening the face of the blade more to allow for the backspin but your margin for error becomes very small.  In this situation it is better to push the ball back.  The flick off a short backspin ball is not a shot that I would recommend.

You could try the Backhand Sidespin Flick as well but again this is a very advanced stoke.

The Push in Detail

The humble push does not sound like an exciting stroke but it is one of the most important shots in Table Tennis. Having a great short push can be the difference between being an average player and being a great player. Make sure you allocate the appropriate amount of practice to mastering the push.

Hi Alois,

thank you for the quick answer, the backhand sidespin flick is an option, the main problem is my forehand.

Your rigt. Actually fh flick is really difficult and bh is easier. Some pro's like ma long etc just do the bh flick on their fh.
