Attacking from backhand

Equipment

I played with a long pimpled rubber in backhand side for some years and then stopped playing TT. Those days I was more of a defensive player. After about 8 years I started playing again but now I am using a short pimpled rubber to my backhand and I rarely chop now.  I use a inverted rubber for my forehand.

But with this short pimple rubber I am not going for attacking shots and even when I try to attack I am not in control and often mishit. When I push since there's no backspin the opponent easily attacks.  And also since my backhand is poor I have a huge problem in returning long services. Therefore I am thinking of switching back to a long pimpled rubber.  Would this be a good change?  And is there a way I can be more aggressive with my backhand?  Any advice is appreciated.

Hi Praveen,

It sounds like the Long pimple would suit your backhand.

With the short pimples you can be more aggressive but you need to get the technique correct first.  The short pimples are unforgiving because you are not generating as much topspin on the ball.

With the long pimples you can also be more aggressive by taking the ball earlier and even attacking off backspin balls.

Tone is in Your Fingers

There's is an old saying about guitar playing - tone is in your fingers. And If you've ever seen a really good guitarist play an old guitar then you'll understand how true that saying is. I know we go on a lot about this topic but it is so true. Once you've got yourself a decent bat, it's no longer up to the equipment, it's up to YOU!
