I have been a fairly defensive player who has had problems attacking first.  How do I convert from the usual short underspin serve, push, push to attack? I want to flick or topspin the ball more effectively in the short game to give myself the advantage.

Hi Ted,

If the ball is short it is best to push the ball back short again.  If this is not working for you then push the ball long and fast or try to make a flick.  For the flick take a look at the lesson on the Forehand Flick.  This is a more risky stroke because there is backspin on the ball.  You will need to brush the ball upwards with a bit of topspin to get the ball over the net.

If the ball comes long then you should definitely make a topspin.  This topspin is a little different because you need to lift it over the net.  Take a look at the lesson on the Forehand Topspin Off Backspin.

The short balls Ted just push them back or block them send them back very fast if you can. Also you can flick the short balls back too but this requires plenty of practice. So practice them with a friend or a coach. The long balls you can attack very well. One thing I find helps me attack the ball especially the long balls is getting into the table quickly with your feet step right in and attack.

Don't worry if the ball goes out because the more you worry the less you will attack, also you will miss more and stuff it up. Just make up your mind and attack it don't think about it just do it kill it. Hope this helps you a lot Ted good luck. I am only a very top A grader Alois is much more than me he is a pro. Bye good luck.
