Attacking fast backspin pushes

Strokes

Hi,

I'm having trouble attacking a fast push, and the ball usually goes flying off the side of my racquet out of play, because of this, I'm having a lot of trouble attacking those longer serves and pushes. Is there any way I can get over this, and why is this happening?

Thanks!

Hi Ethan,

It sounds like you are a little late in your swing.  Try to shorten the swing and make it more vertical to lift the ball over the net.  This will get you to the ball a little earlier and hopefully eliminate the top edges.

Don’t try to do too much with it at first, just focus on the lifting.

Forehand Counterhit

The forehand counterhit or forehand drive is the foundation for more attacking strokes such as the forehand topspin or forehand loop. There are 3 critical factors:

  1. Your feet position
  2. Your start position
  3. Your finish position

If you concentrate on these 3 factors then your stroke will become extremely consistent. Once you can reliably hit 100 balls in a row then you are ready for more attacking strokes. If you can hit 1,000 balls on in a row then you know you've truly mastered the stroke.
