Strokes
Hi Alois,
To counter a backspin serve should I open the racket and loop or close the racket?
Hi Rahul,
You can do both. You open the angle of the racket if you want to brush up the back of the ball and hit a slow spinny topspin. You can also close the angle of the racket to play a faster loop. To do this though you need to move your bat through quickly and brush the top of the ball to counter the backspin.
We've added a video response to further explain what we mean.
The forehand counterhit or forehand drive is the foundation for more attacking strokes such as the forehand topspin or forehand loop. There are 3 critical factors:
If you concentrate on these 3 factors then your stroke will become extremely consistent. Once you can reliably hit 100 balls in a row then you are ready for more attacking strokes. If you can hit 1,000 balls on in a row then you know you've truly mastered the stroke.

Hi Rahul,
We were talking specifically about backspin serves.

HI Rahul,
Take a look at the first few point in this video. You will see Simon at the far end making a topspin against a backspin ball with a very closed angle.
