Hi Paul,

Firstly welcome to the wonderful and confusing world of equipment.

The basics are that you shouldn't get anything too fats to start with.  The 2 bats that we recommend as starter bats are the Stiga Energetic and the Stiga Carbotech.  These are 2 bats with good control and also allow you to generate some spin.

As you progress you can start to customise your bat and get something a little faster with more spin.

The rubber is the rubbery covering on your blade.  The Blade is the wooden part of the bat including the handle.

Flare is just a term used for the shape of the handle.  Handles can be Flared which means they flare out at the bottom, or straight or Anatomic which means they have a ump in the middle of the handle which fits into you rhand.  These are just a matter of preference of feel and don't affect the perfornamce of the blade itself.
