A Question On Serve Percentages

Hi guys! I love your content and please keep going with your easy to understand quality videos! I have a question that I've been pondering for a while. I noticed in one of your videos where you show what zone to avoid serving in, which is the zone that is the easiest length to attack. I was analyzing one of my games I played in a tournament recently, and I noticed 9/25 of my serves were in this zone, so I will try to serve with more purpose now on. One thing my dad always tells me is to serve long more, because I serve short maybe 60-70% of the time. I was wondering what percentage would you recommend with long/half-long/short serves, and what are some pro's percentages on serves? I was thinking maybe 50% short, 30% half-long, and 20% long could be a good percentage. What are your thoughts on this?

Hi,

Firstly thank you for the kind words about the site.

As you progress in the game the longer serves are punished unless they are a surprise and catch your opponent off guard.

Therefore I think the percentages that you talk about are a good insight with 80% being short or half long and the other 20% long and fast.

At the early stages of development and against similar level opposition, long serves can be effective because your opponent's shots may not have the power to hit through you.

Gerada v Lu

Once again Alois and Jeff discuss a great match from the PingSkills Classic. This is the first quarter final between the number 1 seed Simon Gerada and Percy Lu. Without giving too much away, just make sure you watch the incredible backhand that Percy Lu hits in the 4th set. It really is the shot of the tournament.
