Hi Alois,

How can we determine the winner of a that group  http://www.ittf.com/competitions/test/_groups_matches_draw1.asp?grp=11&Event_Type=MSP&Competition_ID=2163 ?

Why HUANG Sheng-Sheng is first,  WU Zhikang-second and  CHEON Minhyuck-third? They all three have 5 points-2 wins and 1 loss.

Hi Nasko,

If they are even on pool points then it goes on the matches just between the three players involved.  They have all won 1 match each against each other so thing are still even.  Then it goes to games between the three players.  Huang has won 10 lost 5, Wu has won 9 lost 5 and Cheon has won 9 lost 6 so that determines the placings.

We have had this feedback from our Umpiring guru, Graeme Ireland, as he was looking over our rules questions.

"Whilst the first 3 sentences were right, the next one wasn’t and could have given the wrong idea about how to do the calculation. The correct answer is that, just looking at the matches between the 3 equal on 5 Match Points, Huang won 6 games and lost 5, Wu won 5 lost 5, and Cheon won 5 lost 6. One of the fundamental misunderstandings in calculating groups results is to take the ratio of games/won lost for all matches, not just those between players who are equal."

So you don't take into account the matches against players that are not tied.  Thanks again Graeme for your help.
