Hi !
Werner Schlager is my idol.Do you know which style does he play, some people said that he's a blocker, flat hitter but I don't think so.
Thanks.
Hi Lan,
Whatever style he plays it is obviously effective. I think he plays a very clever game always using subtle change of spin, speed and placement to gain advantage. One of his strengths is that it is hard to define him into a category.
Although attacking is the most popular style at the top level in Table Tennis, it is important to be able to defend well. If you choose to play a defensive style then you should be practicing these strokes all the time. If you play an attacking stroke then you should still try and find some time for these strokes. If you can win one extra point by defending well when pressured, it could make the difference between winning and losing.

I like Schlager's style too (though my fav is still Maze). He is so versatile. He is effective as a defender (he makes more use of the chop than most non-defensive players, and he can block with the best of them) and as an attacker (he has one helluva backhand, has a wider range of serves than just about anyone, and all the regular offensive arsenal).

Of course I wouldn't say Schlager and/or Maze were more versatile than the Great One. Just saying Schlager seems more versatile than most...and his use of the chop (especially his match against Wang Liqin in the Paris World Championship) was quite noticeable.
I've always heard of how Waldner is arguably the best player in history. However, while I've started watching footage of players like Schlager and Maze recently I never got a chance to watch Waldner at his peak.
