Hi, pingskills. I recently watched the world youth championships and saw yuna ojio gripping the racket in a very strange way and she seems to have good success with it. What do you think are the pros and cons of that grip?

Hello Jasper!

Yuna Ojio is an incredible player and her grip is unique. I haven't really tried playing with this grip for any period of time.  I believe that the pros of using this grip are that it gives her better control and accuracy as it provides the best spin and flat hitting control. This grip also allows for a more consistent angle of attack and blocking accuracy. The cons of this grip are that it can be quite difficult to learn, and usually takes more time to learn as compared to more common grips. It can also be more restrictive for attacking shots, as the angle of attack may become limited. Ultimately, it is up to the individual player to decide whether a certain grip works for them or not.

My view is to start with the shake hands grip as it is the most versatile and has no real weaknesses apart from the cross over point, and train with it. I can't see any reason to use anything else unless you have some physical reason to use an unconventional grip.

This grip looks like one that would result in me often spending considerable time retrieving my racket from across the room and my opponents having to wear helmets.

Hey guys, I enjoyed the video on grips.  In my 20's I originally learned to play using the penhold grip.  In my 70's I when I went back to table tennis I tried shakehand but found it just didn't work for me.  Then I was introduced to a custom made Jpen racket with a smooth cork deeply notched grip that perfectly fits my hand.  My game has improved remarkably.  I find the Jpen orientation of the racket enables me to spin the ball effectively in any direction for service and the index finger notch gives me a sure grip and the ability to re-orient the blade to a penhold position instantly if the situation warrants that type of hold.
