Is it legal to toss the ball towards your self rather than tossing it straight upwards?

Hi Maaz,

The rule states that you must throw the ball nearly vertical. This gets interpreted quite loosely and a lot of players throw the ball towards themselves when serving the pendulum serve. The problem arises when umpires are inconsistent with their rulings. I really don't think it's fair when a player is allowed to serve with quite a horizontal toss and then suddenly get faulted in an important match. If the Umpires are going to be strict on this ruling, it needs to made clear by the ITTF that this is the case and somehow these rules need to be enforced all the way down to local club level. That is very hard to do unfortunately.

Hi Maaz,

I agree with Jeff that this is a really difficult rule to enforce.  If you do throw it up towards yourself according to the strict rules, then it is a fault.
