Hello! When my opponent does a short heavy backspin serve I usually push to ball back short with my own heavy spin.
I've seen players topspins/loop backspin balls, and I wonder if you can do it against a short backspin serve?
Thanks.
Hi Johnny,
It is very difficult against a short backspin ball. You are better to play a short push or you could try to flick. With the flick, you need to have an open racket and then lift the ball with a little topspin to get it over the net. The other option is the Backhand Sidespin Flick which is a more advanced stroke.
A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
