Shoulder position and body weight while playing BH Topspin

Strokes

Hi Alois,

While watching the backhand topspin against backspin video, I got the feeling Jeff was turning his right shoulder a little bit and bringing in front of the body. Is that observation correct? And is it something I should try to incorporate when still developing the stroke?

Also, is there any transfer of body weight while playing backhand topspin like we do in forehand topspin, or should the balance always be maintained while playing this stroke?

Hi Abhinav,

Jeff does turn and use his shoulders a little to make the stroke.

At first you don't need to do that.  Think about keeping the body quite still and using the arm.  As you get the feel for the arm motion, then incorporate the shoulders, waist and legs.

The transfer of weight is slight from the left leg to the right leg during the stroke.

Forehand Counterhit

The forehand counterhit or forehand drive is the foundation for more attacking strokes such as the forehand topspin or forehand loop. There are 3 critical factors:

  1. Your feet position
  2. Your start position
  3. Your finish position

If you concentrate on these 3 factors then your stroke will become extremely consistent. Once you can reliably hit 100 balls in a row then you are ready for more attacking strokes. If you can hit 1,000 balls on in a row then you know you've truly mastered the stroke.
