dear ping skills,

How do you get lots of spin on your serve and how do you keep your palm flat for when you do your toss because i always either foul or have to search for the ball which is ideally avoided

Hi Jean-Paul,

Firstly to generate a lot of spin you need to brush the ball really fast and also brush the ball on contact.   If you can follow these two principles you will start to generate good spin on the ball.

To keep your palm flat separate your thumb.  This will leave a little indentation where you can rest the ball and it won't roll around as much.  This will help you to throw the ball up straight.  A way of practicing throwing the ball straight is to put a pice of paper on the floor in front of you.  Then throw the ball up and try to get it to land on the paper consistently.

The Kicker Serve

The kicker serve is one of our "must learn" serves. It's fast, fun, and has lots of topspin. It can be dangerous because if it's not fast enough and if you don't surprise your opponent then they may be able to attack it forcefully putting you on the defensive straight away. Used well though, and sparingly, it can be a great weapon. It can win you a point outright and it will stop your opponent from standing over the table waiting for your short serves since they need to be ready for anything.
