Receiving serves

Receiving

Hi, Alois and Jeff,

I notice that the professionals crouch down very low when preparing to receive a serve, but they always move before the ball is actually served, and receive the serve in a much taller stance.  Why do they get so low when they never actually receive the serve in that position?  It seems like wasted motion.

Thanks

Hi Marv,

I think it gets them to the ball a bit faster remembering the the opponent can serve anywhere on the table.

I think a lot of the top players do get quite low when receiving too. I find that getting low to receive serves helps you judge where the ball is going better, and whether it will be long or short.
