Receiving
Hi
I know that there is a neutral, standard position of receiving a serve, crouched in a way on the backhand side if the table with the racket in a neutral position. However, I see players, just before the server makes contact on the ball, getting up as if becoming readier. Could you please explain this to me?
Hi,
Yes a lot of the top players do this to be in motion as the ball is coming. If you are static it is more difficult to get into motion.
A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.

Hi
Thanks that is very helpful but what if they start moving their body forward and then a long serve comes. Do they know which serve is going to be played so they can move to play their shot?
They have very good movement. If you watch them when the ball then comes long they are still able to jump back into position to make the long ball.
