Receiving
Hi Alois,
Kindly tell me what is the correct position to receive the service from the opponent. Recently, I was playing an opponent who was serving on my backhand, which is my weakest link. I tried to move across the table to play that ball with my forehand, which was either going wide or falling into the net.
I lost that match and I felt after the match that my positioning while receiving his serve was wrong and I felt too many gaps for him to place his serve.
Kindly give me valuable guidance to rectify this technique.
Regards,
Ram
Hi Ram,
You need to take into consideration where your opponent is serving from when you position yourself to return serve.
Take a look at our lesson on the Ready Position. This will show it to you clearly and you will be able to understand better how to position yourself.
A really important skill in table tennis is to be able to judge if a serve will be short or long. If it's short you won't be able to take a full swing at the ball and hence will need to use either a push or a flick to return the ball. However, if it is coming long then you can make a topspin attack. In this video we give you some tips to help you judge the length of the serve and hopefully this makes you a better returner.
