Strokes
I am a Penhold Grip player. Does your techniques in the videos applies to Penhold also? Thanks
Hi Alan,
Yes, many of the techniques we demonstrate in our videos at PingSkills are applicable to penhold players as well, although there may be some modifications needed for certain strokes due to the different grip. For example, the fundamental strokes like the forehand drive and the serve can be executed similarly by both shakehand and penhold players. However, penhold players will often need to adapt their wrist movement and body positioning to compensate for the grip's limitations, especially on the backhand side.
Penhold players often use either the traditional Chinese penhold backhand, which allows for powerful wrist action, or the reverse penhold backhand (RPB), which resembles the shakehand backhand and provides a greater reach. It's important for you as a penhold player to recognise the strengths of your grip, such as the superior wrist flexibility and forehand strokes, and to train to maximize these advantages. It's also critical to be aware of the potential limitations, especially on the backhand side, and work on techniques like the RPB to mitigate these. When watching our PingSkills videos or any table tennis instruction, consider how each technique or movement can be translated into the penhold grip framework. Sometimes, it may be beneficial to seek out resources and coaching specifically tailored to the penhold style to ensure that the nuances of your game are being properly addressed.
