Serving
I have discovered of late that while doing the pendulum sidespin and top spin serves lifting the elbow helps a great deal. In fact, it is crucial. As I started doing it consciously and making my stance more side on a great deal fluency seems to have flowed into my serve. Same with backspin serves. On right track?
Hi Vijay,
Good to hear from you.
It definitely sounds like you are on the right track. If you are feeling comfortable and managing to vary the spin then that is perfect.
It is interesting that different players have different things that trigger the action for them. I am glad that you have discovered the lifting of the elbow helps you to get the flow with the serve.
I like to think of the elbow staying still during the serve and the movement coming front he forearm and wrist to generate whatever spin, speed and placement you need.
Question actions
The kicker serve is one of our "must learn" serves. It's fast, fun, and has lots of topspin. It can be dangerous because if it's not fast enough and if you don't surprise your opponent then they may be able to attack it forcefully putting you on the defensive straight away. Used well though, and sparingly, it can be a great weapon. It can win you a point outright and it will stop your opponent from standing over the table waiting for your short serves since they need to be ready for anything.
