Strokes
Hi,
I am currently teaching a group of very able boys in secondary school, and the areas we are trying to improve are the Backhand Top Spin and the Forehand Smash. To break the skill down for them we are looking at the PAR (Preparation, Action and Recovery) phases for each skill. Would it be possible to get some help with what are the important teaching points for each skill, breaking it down into the PAR phases? I want to ensure that I am teaching the pupils the correct technique as table tennis is not one of my main sports.
Many thanks.
Trish
Hi Trish,
Great that you are teaching them the skills. First, have you seen the lesson on the Backhand Topspin Against Block.
As far as the PAR phases, i guess you could talk to them about the Basic Stance or Ready position to start with as the preparation or if you want the Start position that we emphasise as the Preparation. The Action is the swing from start to finish and the Recovery is getting back to the start position if we are talking about the same stroke or back to the Ready position if we are talking about a rally.
I hope this helps. Let me know if I am on the right track or not.
Most players are told to always return to the ready position after every stroke but that might be hurting your game. In this video, we reveal a smarter way to recover:
✔ Track the ball immediately after your shot
✔ Move your racket into position for the next shot instead of blindly resetting
✔ Improve your timing, balance, and flow during rallies
Whether you’re a beginner or advanced player, understanding this subtle change can have a big impact on your consistency and speed around the table.
